quartz ridges

Post  Bol on Fri Sep 20, 2013 4:22 pm

Gday lads and ladettes
Heading to a mates place tomorrow because we have just found 4 ridges of quartz outcrops running through his place. His property is pretty big (for this area anyway) 22 000 acres.Closet gold mines are about 5km away as the crow flies and we had a pretty good look and found no sign of mines, trenches etc, might be nothing there...or maybe the old guys missed it as its a grazing property and has been for over 100 years????
We are going to run a few detectors over it tomorrow and knock back a beer or two Very Happy
Any advice on what to keep an eye out for on unworked quartz outcrops?
If we find anything i'll post it up.
Cheers

G'day Bol

Good luck out there mate. Just remember that millions of years ago the quartz reefs were way higher than what you see now, many hundreds of meters higher, so make sure you check down slope to any gullies etc as well as in amongst the actual reefs that you see now. Also look from a high point and try and see which way the quartz reefs have broken down and spread out along the slopes, follow the shedding quartz.

Have fun and good luck.

cheers dave

Hi Bol, generally any quartz reef/ridge that is high and proud in the landscape often does not contain any, or much gold. The mineralised quartz veins that contain gold often erode more then pure massive quartz veins so they are often subdued and don't stick out of the ground much.

Having said that the best place to look for gold shed from quartz reefs is nearly always below a quartz vein where slopes level out and there is shallow bedrock. If you find gold there then you can start looking everywhere else on and along the quartz reef lines.

Best of luck
