Hzj75 toyota ute water temps

Post  Boony89 on Thu Jan 02, 2014 1:05 pm

Hi guys, I'm wondering if someone can help answer if I should be concerned about the water temps I'm reaching in my land cruiser ute,
I had to replace the water temp sensor unit and gauge due do the old one dying, and it has the celcius display on it,
I have not yet replaced the thermostat or radiator cap as all has been working well, but after a few hard trips on the car towing in 4th gear (can't tow in fifth I believe), doing 110km/h and the outside Temperature over 40degrees, and baking hot road and sun in the desert my water temp was reaching over 100 Celsius, does anyone know what exactly constitutes too hot for the water temp? The car won't work much harder than that but I believe 80 is the normal operating temp and was hoping someone could shed some light on the matter?

Cheers!

Hi Boony , 100c is a little high , around 80c would be considered normal , when my Troopy started to run hot the radiator was the cause , i replaced it with a new one that fixed it , maybe a flush would clear out any restriction present , if it was a leaking cap it probably would be losing water , as far as towing in 5th i use to tow my race car ( around 2-2 1/2 tonnes all up ) in 5th overdrive no problems at all , this would reduce your RPM and should help the engine run a little cooler . Hope you can get your problem sorted but will probably be a process of elimination to find the cause of the heat problem , good luck ..cheers mick

Hi Boony,
You don't mention the age and km's your ute has done.
Does it have a thermo fan, if so is it cutting in when the temperature rises?
Are your fan belts in tip top condition and tensioned?

Cheers

Gday Boony ,

HZJ75 - that would be running a 1HZ 4.2 engine , to answer your question on the normal operating temp - the thermostat should be opening at 78 degrees celsiuis . So yes your Tojo should be running constantly around the 80 deg mark .
A couple of things to check first - radiator condition , viscous fan is working properly and if your running around in those high temp regions make sure youre using anti-boil coolant .
If you have Air Con fitted to the old girl make sure you check the condensor condition as i have seen these block up and limit the air flow to the radiator .
Its a starting point anyway - hope this helps ...

Cheers
