Good dirt or not?

Post  summit1966 on Sat Apr 04, 2015 1:25 pm

hi all, happy Easter.

I am new to this gold prospecting game and I need a little advice on some dirt I collected near the Rushworth area of Victoria. I collected this dirt from a dry ditch/creek thingy. There is some sand in the pan and some stones. Does this seem like the sort of dirt/minerals that gold is found in? Hope you guys a little more experienced than me could help out. There is a link to the images below.

Thanks

Yep.It is bellow the finer sand in your pan, that you should get an even finer tail of darker looking christaline sand referred to as "Black Sand" It is in this black sand, that all your heavier minerals, such that of gemstones and finer gold tends to congregate/accumulate.If you happen to find no trace of black sand in your pan, coming from your hole in the creek, means that you either haven't dug down deep enough or there is little black sand to be found throughout that section of creek. Now unless you're after micron gold,(which is practically invisible to the naked eye),and you happen to see no trace of fine gold, mixed with the black sands or little black sand itself, after panning off the courser materials from the pan,the location of your dig site, has either been cleaned out before you,or,is just to poor paying towards the courser colours of accumulated gold in the area.
Look into our Sluicing & panning section for further details regarding your question.
