GPS info for newbee.....help

Post  ThinkBig on Thu May 14, 2015 3:39 pm

Hi Everyone

I’m a newbee
I'm highly impressed with the info and detail in this forum.
Still working out how this forum works. So please excuse any dumb mistakes in postings etc
The village I come from didn't hand out much intelligence regarding GPS gizmos
Can you help or point me in the right direction?
I’m looking for a GPS system that will allow me to plot routes on offline maps.
Ie a handheld “gizmo” that will talk to a lap top or Ipad and….
1 act as a compass
2 get me back the car if I get lost
3 allow me to view where I  have been at the end of the day on a detailed survey map
4 allow me to save that route on my laptop ( or tablet)
5 plot new routes for subsequent days
6 allow multiple routes to be seen on the same  map...I think they're called over lays
7 and anything else that a grey nomad might me need in the donga to do with GPS

Kindest of Regards

There will be folk on here that can provide you with a more integrated solution, but my approach is as follows -
1 act as a compass
- I use a Garmin Rino GPS that has a built in Compass function
2 get me back the car if I get lost
- Use either the Rino or the GPS built into the GPZ7000 as I always mark my starting point there.
3 allow me to view where I  have been at the end of the day on a detailed survey map
- At this time I also use a vehicle Garmin GPS that has a track function and I can download that to PC for big scale where I have been in the vehicle
- The Rino and the GPS in the GPZ can show your tracks (Geo Trails) when walking around
4 allow me to save that route on my laptop ( or tablet)
- Both Car Garmin and GPZ details can both be transferred to a PC
5 plot new routes for subsequent days
- This depends on if you are talking about vehicle or detecting routes.  Garmin can plot planned vehicle routes and again GPZ can show a planned place to go to and your past "Geo Trails", but not a route say of how to get from your car to that place (that I have used anyway).
6 allow multiple routes to be seen on the same  map...I think they're called over lays
- Sorry I haven't seen anything of that nature in my portable devices, but you can do that on PC mapping software.
7 and anything else that a grey nomad might me need in the donga to do with GPS
- I purchased the Garmin Rino GPS as it also has an 80CH UHF CB built in, just to save the number of devices that I have to carry and recharge.
- I also have a portable EPIRB (PLB) that is essential if by yourself or is going out of site of a partner or vehicle.

Others will have lots of different approaches so look at all of them and decide what is best suited to your needs.

What mapping software to use and what maps to use, that is a different question, as I am still trying to decide what are the best maps to use and where to source them for use on OziExplorer my preferred mapping application, at this time.

I am surprised that you haven't had others respond yet, but they are hopefully out finding some yellow. I didn't say "finding lots of yellow" as I want them to leave some for me.

G'day ThinkBig, just about any 'mapping' handheld now will do the trick, I use garmin but not saying to go down that road either, goto anaconda or someone like that and talk to the guys there, you will soon make up your mind....they will all plug into laptop and be able to be easily used with google earth......Oh and I always have an army compass in my backpack too, can't just rely on gizmo's
