Castlemaine Area - Advice

Post  neo__04 on Sun May 24, 2015 8:21 pm

Hey all,

Thinking of heading to castlemaine area for 4 days over the june long weekend.

Never been up that way but going to give it a shot.

Not knowing the area, does anyone have any recommendations on where a good stop to camp would be?

Taking a couple of mates who will just be there for the camping and ill wonder off and do some detecting.

So was hoping for some guidance on a good spot to camp, that i can then walk off from and head out prospecting.
(Not worried about an actual campground, dont need facilities)

Any help would be great. PM me if you like.

Please read here about Castlemaine Heritage Park:

There are some places where law prohibit us to do certain activities ( detecting, camping ) so make sure you always check with Park Victoria or Local Park Rangers before you go into unknown area.

You also need a Miners Right licence to enjoy this hobby in Victoria.

If you need any question please ask and i am sure someone will be able to help you.

You can find many old newspaper articles from gold rush:

One spot came to mine that is south of Chewton.

From Chewton drive down the Chewton-Vaughan rd as you come to the top of the first raise there is a track on your right Jacobs track turn in there and drive about 1k and the only track on your left turn there and follow that to the end and you will come to a nice flat camp spot with lot of area to explorer.

I am working a area not that far away so keep the noise down Very Happy

Never Been to Chewton, so it sounds like a plan.

Will be spending 4-5 days there over next weekend.

Looking forward to it.

Need to find my first bit of yellow!

Maybe you never heard of Chewton but its quite a place.Just few sentences and you can find the rest if you like to read about gold discovery:

Gold discovered in 1851 changed Chewton forever. The Forest Creek diggings became the world’s richest shallow alluvial goldfield. The attraction of gold at Forest Creek led to the world's largest migration in the 19th Century.

15th December 1851. The Monster Meeting attracted over 12,000 diggers protesting the increased mining licence fee. Predating the Red Ribbon Rebellion in Bendigo (1853) and Eureka in Ballarat (1854) was a key step towards democracy in the State of Victoria.
