Advise; sleep in 4x4, van or in rooftoptent?

Post  Swedes63 on Wed Apr 27, 2016 1:39 pm

Hi all. I will arrive in Perth 2/6 and will buy a 4x4 to go for 5 weeks around Leonora. Would you recomend sleeping in the car or get a car with a rooftoptent ? Thinking about moisture, wind, rain etc that time of year. Will probably have enough space in car for bed and all important stuff. Kenneth

I'm not convinced with the roof top tents idea Swedes63. As they take a while to set up (10 to 20 minutes) and to put away again, I believe they are only good if you're going to stop at a certain place for a few days, but if you plan to move around often, then you'd be setting it up and folding it away all the time which would really irritate me. The bed in the van is good and a very easy setup, but be aware that it does take up a bit of space. Of the 2, I'd go the bed in the car option.

Thanks for the link! Havent checked that site earlier. Plowed Gumtree for last 6 months :-) Not any wiser! But a Cherokee, Pathfinder, ford explorer, Pajero or similar. Heaps of stuff in a ex backpacker car. Actually I am becoming one by the looks of it! Cant bring to much as British Airways allow only 23 kg luggage. 2 Years ago, a few friends bought a Pajero for 6000$ used it for 2 mnths and the same dealer offered 1000$ !! Across the street they finally got 2500$. I might park it in Kalgoorly after and let my friends rent it from me coming next year. Or is anyone up for a hire? Could pay 2000$ 2/6-9/7

I have a Rooftop tent (RTT) on a Prado, very roomy and comfortable, or swag (under side awing), plus a campervan where conditions allow its use.
I have found that RTT is quick and easy to set up, but a pain in the butt to pack up, especially by myself.  So when using this config I use the swag when travelling and RTT if camped in one spot for several days.  But my preferred accommodation is the camper van, when track conditions allow it, but it is only 2WD.
