Newbie looking for advice.

Post  Dg101g on Sun Jul 10, 2016 1:26 pm

Hello all.
I'm trying to get into this exiting hobby of prospecting. I have visit 3 different minelab dealerships trying to get information on detectors that would be suitable for a newbie like myself. After talking to the first two dealers it seemed like that the SDC 2300 was the detector for me. This all changed at the last dealer I visit, who recommended the GPX 4500 too me given the same price tag I was told it would be more versatile and more capable of finding bigger gold at depth. I would be spending most of the time detecting in the golden triangle of Victoria.
Any help and information regarding "my first" detector would be appreciated.

I would listen to the last dealer, the 4500 great all round detector will find small gold using small coils and larger nuggets with the bigger coils.

Hi Dg101g

There are many detectors around and all have ability to find a gold.
Not by themselves but with a good operator.
So its important to learn your machine as best possible.
if you can do a day training it will save you time trying to figure all by yourself.
Joining club is great as they have monthly trips and you will meet many experienced operators who will share some knowledge.

First step is to get Miners right.

For a new person coming in a hobby who wants to find a small piece of gold on most of detecting trips 2300 will do the job.

Its practically switch on and go.

4500 is a great detector and sure will find a gold. Some will argue here was the best detector ever made (lets not go there for now Twisted Evil ).

I would suggest to you to hire a 2300 for a day.Maybe 4500 another day.You will quickly get an idea about what is working for you.

Expenses to hire machine is not big-maybe 60-70 dollars. Not much comparing cost of buying one.

Post here when you planing a trip and where and someone might take you out for a day.

Good luck and when in a Gt detecting please take rubbish with you and make sure all holes you dig are closed and covered as best possible.

GoldEN

Ok I done it.
I ordered the GPX 4500 today after talking to a friend who owns a GPX 5000 and his missus is using an SDC 2300.
So the learning will begin, I will have a day's training with the dealer which hopefully will give me the basic understanding of the GPX.
Thank you for your valued input.
