New Gold Prospector in NSW

Post  LordJR on Thu Nov 03, 2016 5:44 pm

Hello..

Originally, from the U.S. prospecting for gold or fossicking as I've found it to be called here has been a dream of mine since I first caught gold fever high in the rocky mountains of Colorado, USA. A few weeks ago for my birthday weekend, I finally got me a pan and metal detector and headed out to the bush at Ophir, NSW where I'm told the Australian gold rush started. It was a bust on gems/gold, but I did enjoy getting out and trying out my equipment. I even came away with a square 1800s horseshoe nail. Other than that mostly iron 1800s prospector junk. I got all licensed and permitted up for NSW and Victoria and hoping to strike out into the bush for my first gold find. Still haven't had that happen yet. Hoping to meet others as well, as being alone in the bush is no where near as fun.

Cheers!

G'day Jon Ray and welcome to the forum

Glad to see you enjoy the outdoors prospecting/fossicking, there is going to be quite a big meeting/gathering at Hill End (12th Nov weekend), it is the NAPFA (New South Wales ACT Prospectors Fossickers Association) Annual General Meeting, plenty go for a detect etc and catch up with others as well as going to the AGM, (Members)

NSW has a few places to go detecting and I guess you have already found some that have got your attention.

Good luck and have fun.

cheers dave

Thanks for the welcome guys! I'll be down in Victoria on the 12th otherwise would of liked to try to Meetup. Sounds like a fun group. I'll look more into joining.

A few photos from trips to Ophir and Oberon, NSW.

Oberon

Ophir

And my first time out in Ophir, I came across and almost jumped on an Eastern Brown Snake, only the 2nd most venomous snake in Australia!
