Is this real gold?

Post  Shinegold on Tue Jan 31, 2017 8:02 pm

I purchased some pendants that were tested to be fake gold... however, these pendants contain what looks like panned/small nuggets. Do you think that there could be real gold placed in gold plated pendants?

G'day Shinegold,

I would say the little nuggies in those pendants are the real thing, but I can see on one of the claps there is something written on it and could be gold plated.

Cheers.

Mike.

They certainly look the part Shinegold, but if you'v had them pendants in the photo tested as fake, then the stamp of 14K gold on the links, would also be fake. If the casings are gold plated, then they would be stated as such. I'v never encountered a Jeweller who puts real gold in amongst fake gold casings. Not saying it doesn't exist, just never encountered one. A stamp of 1/20 14K on jewellery, indicates that the piece is gold filled The 1/20 means that there is one part gold to every 20 parts of other materials. The 14K on the stamp notes that the gold used, is 14-carat gold.

Thanks guys, the casings/pendants are fake, 1/20 hallmark means fake, that's for sure. I just hope the gold inside them is real. I don't think a XRF machine could test what's inside... hopefully not, means I still have a chance. Those nuggets look way too real.

G'day, I used to make these sort of things ,pendants & ear rings, from memory I could get the frames in various grades, I settled on the 14 Ct but others may have used lower grades. The nuggets sure look the goods to me. Hope this helps. Bruce

About 20 years ago I filled one of these pendants with scraps and gave it my 10 year old Grandaughter. Parents did not wish her to have a valuable nugget at her age. No doubt there were others done as they were readily available.

Get one out and pour conc. hydrofluoric acid on it . Or hit it with a hammer and see if it flattens out . Look with a maggy to see if it looks like lead.

Those lockets were sold by The Diggers Hut, Sunbury, Vic. Mail order only . They sold many different sized lockets , I still have the list and prices.

Could be 14ct rolled gold lockets, which is probably why the bail isn't soldered closed. The gold flakes in the photo look natural.

An old scam was to electro plate natural copper nuggets but is usually done with pieces larger than 1 cm

If the pendants are "cheap" should be easy enough to open and test one or two nuggets inside. May be easy enough to get new pendants if you want to return the contents to them.

Good luck. I hope you are going to be a happy chappy.
