Latin   Q.....E......D

"Q.E.D." (sometimes written "QED") is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase "quod erat demonstrandum" ("that which was to be demonstrated"), a notation which is often placed at the end of a mathematical proof to indicate its completion.

GJ,

Still not sure that would be right. I was thinking something like "Quatro's Electronic Device" or something along those lines. Just curious that't all. Very Happy

Is there anybody other than Reg actually using this machine?.....This detector stated out sounding like it was pretty good but finding actual User Information is like trying to find a Muslim  at a Catholic Mass. Rolling Eyes

Pretty sure it was $1270 for just the unit, the new $1570 now includes the battery setup as well. I got a recent price for just the unit and it was around $1300.

I'll try and post my thoughts as soon as I get it out the bush, this is my first detector so It might be good to get the perspective of someone just starting out because I'm up and running with a borrowed coil for under $2,000. Also there seems to be bugger all feed back from actual use in the field, but then again I have unit #27 so I guess being hand built by just one bloke there aren't many out there yet.
Total weight with 11" minelab mono and 4800mah lipo (10hours est) is just 2.2kg, seems very light to me.
Can't wait to get it out.

Re: QED Information

Post  Jarrodt6 on Wed Mar 29, 2017 8:46 pm

Snuck out last night for an hour and a half just to play with some settings. It made a ton of noise when I first turned it on but once it was ground balanced which I found really easy and I played with the settings it was extremely quiet, almost to the point I thought I had it turned down too much, it's not like the gpx that is the only other detector I've ever used, the threshold is low and you don't so much as listen for a slight change but with my QED it's all quiet and then a signal jumps out and smacks you. I did get a fair few false signals but my borrowed coil is old and well used and I pick up a coiltek elite 11" tomorrow so I'll see if that helps.
I got some good info today about settings that I will be keen to try, just had a play in the back yard with some buried coins at different depths and I definitely got some improvements.

Not an amazing update I know, I plan to have a few more goes to get some confidence up then I'll join my old man with his gpx4000 and hit up some good spots.

Re: QED Information

Post  Jarrodt6 on Sun Apr 02, 2017 11:55 pm

Ok, so probably got another 4-5 hours with the QED now. Turns out the false signals were coming from the inline fuse I installed, would never have guessed. Really getting the hang of this machine now, no gold yet but finding a ton of trash inc a .22 bullet at least 8 inches and a few tiny shot gun pellets. I have heard so much carry on about ground balance issues and I'm not sure how hot the ground is around Dolly's creek but you just set it up and off you go, if it sounds a bit noisy go down a couple of numbers, if it gets worse go up. Once I get it right I hardly have to touch it again and it runs super smooth and quiet.
I've adjusted the volume up a long way and now get a constant threshold.
Today I was working around some diggings that had a fair few recent detector holes in them and I was pulling out tiny targets in between them at decent depths, maybe they knew it was trash, maybe they didn't hear anything, who knows. But it did give me some more confidence in the machine.
Just for interest the settings that seem good at the moment with the 11" are
1 gb - around 140
2 bias - 50
3 volume - 70
4 gain - 4
5 mode - 6

Where did you install the fuse?
Maybe it should be a non inductive type?? Or have better contacts. Any arcing, even super small,  could cause interference.

Re: QED Information

Post  Jarrodt6 on Sat Apr 15, 2017 3:20 am

I originally installed a small cheap white inline fuse holder from jaycar, it's the one that just clips together. I got rid of that and replaced it with the black one that screws together and has much more spring tension on the fuse and problem solved.
I haven't had it out much since so I just buried some test targets to play with, got it to the point where I can detect a $1 coin at 12 inches then swing across and detect a tiny shotgun pellet at 4 inches. I'm not actually sure how good that is and yes I know the soil could be different etc but it was interesting to see the difference settings can make.
I spent a couple of hours in a gully yesterday and the only real difference I've made is running the volume lower at 35 for a bit less back ground noise, not that there is much. In fact it's so quiet every now and then you feel like waving the pick under it but then you walk over a .22 bullet and the signal almost makes you jump it's so sharp.

I'll have to remember to take some pics but basically it's on a gpx shaft with the control box mounted in front of the handle, you can use a finger on the handle hand to adjust but it just as easy to reach across with your opposite hand.
I have a small plastic box open at one end mounted under the arm rest and it just fits the 4800mah lipo and fuse if you slide them in right, it's a very tight fit and doesn't move at all but you can pull it all out in a couple of seconds. I'll probably design something even better in the future though.

I should be heading out this Easter weekend to actually have a serious crack at some known spots, up until now I've been happy to learn the settings.

Hopefully the next post will be about the good stuff!

Cheers, Jarrod.

Sounds like your QED is running quite well.
Good to hear that a better qual fuse and holder fixed the noise prob. Hope you strike a bit of gold during Easter.

Re: QED Information

Post  Jarrodt6 on Sat Apr 29, 2017 10:28 pm

So a quick update, nothing huge but the my QED has found gold, yes I'm on the scoreboard and only had to go out twice. Nothing huge but in some ways that's more impressive I guess, found a 0.085g bit with my 11" coiltek elite at about 2 inches and my old man gave me a test on a patch he flogged with his gpx4000 and I found another .17g piece in there. Really enjoying learning the machine, I learn something new every time I get it out. Had a chance to find some decent gold but all this rain had soaked the area beyond what we wanted to detect in so hopefully some nice weather will dry it out and we will get back in there.

Re: QED Information

Post  Jarrodt6 on Wed May 17, 2017 11:39 pm

So far I'm really happy with mine and 100% confident on the small stuff. If I find something at depth that at least matches the later gpx stuff I'll be over the moon for my lightweight sub $2000 setup. Even in JP's review he claims it had 2/3rds the depth of the z7000, and the 7000 claims to have up to 40% over the gpx series, read that however you want but it's almost admitting a QED has the depth potential of a gpx, which I'd be happy with.
Also if I can find .085 bits in noisy ground with an 11" then how small could it find with an 8"?
We are hoping to get back out this weekend if the weather is ok and I'll give the 16" a run in an open paddock that has produced recently.

Had a little stint in the bush and scored a nice little 1.7gram nugget at 6" with a really nice clear impossible to miss signal. Certainly gained some more confidence after that. It really is the kind of machine that rewards you taking the time to understand it. If someone wants to just turn it on a go once in a blue moon it will do it but there would be better detectors for that. Every day I get it out I learn something new, it's not hard to learn, you just have to be willing and the rewards are starting to come.

Hey mate,
That seems like a really run of the mill size nugget & average depth too, so it sounds like it's doing pretty good the QED good solid signal as one would expect !! what coil & what ground conditions ? how is the ground balance going for you ?

Re: QED Information

Post  Jarrodt6 on Tue May 23, 2017 10:03 pm

I'm running an 11" coiltek elite, very happy with it so far.
The ground is pretty tricky, side of a hill, sometimes the top soil is too deep then walk 15 meters and you could be on iron stained bedrock so it should test the ground balance a bit but I haven't had too much trouble adjusting it as I go because I have mine set up so I can operate it with 1 finger of the hand holding the handle but I don't find I have to adjust it much, just couple of digits up or down every now and then. I could run the gain a bit lower still and put it in a higher mode and it would be whisper quiet all day and still find targets well but I know my dad has been over the hill and got most of it so I was really trying to run maximum sensitivity to find the small stuff he might have missed. He would have found my little bit if he had swung over it with his gpx and I'm sure most people would have with almost any detector.
The thing I have in the back of my mind though is that everyone knows a gpx works so you can just buy one and it you're finding nothing then it's probably just you, but there are hardly any reviews of the QED so sometimes I wonder "does this thing even work?" but now I have a .085 bit and a 1.7g I'm gaining confidence, don't forget this is my first detector and I'm new to this.
