Remarkable Gold Patches.

Post  G.B. on Thu Feb 02, 2017 10:19 pm

There have been many larger renowned gold patches discovered over the years. What do you know about them. Feel free to add a patch and tell the history.

I have always wanted to know the History of the Specking Patch W.A. Can anyone oblige.

G'day GB,

Well I have heard of a few very big patches over the last 10 yrs being found over in WA. Some were around the 400+oz and some were 2000+oz sorry I can't give the history of them, but there could be some info of some in the GG&T mags.

Cheers.

Ok. This patch was/is so close to a major town in central Vic it was/is ridiculous. Found just 12 mths ago. No big gold, biggest 20g's. But in numbers, hundreds. Damn, kept producing and still does to present date. Ok, now its tiny stuff and is known to "us" as deisel gully, fuel in the tank. But damn, would i like to put from surface there to bedrock, 4 foot deep, through a tromel. Its still out there.

The Specking Patch.

Found by Thomo with Snowy Barns.
We came in from Redcastle and filled up at Sullivan's.
Eric said they are finding heaps of gold at the Specking Patch.
We said that's good and went back to Redcastle. .....

Years later were filling up in Leinster and the guy filling us up talked about the S P.
He pegged PA a long way from the find and got $25000 from Bondy.
One of the first boats we missed...................

Thanks fella's it would be interesting to know how much gold was actually detected from the Specking Patch.

A few years ago l heard of a couple of patches found that gave up some good gold. One was at maryborough after a burn l believe from memory it was called Madman's Gully or similiar.

Another was out the back of Tooleen or Greytown that apparently when word got out it was like Burke Street.

Would anyone hazard to guess how much gold Tibooburra has yeilded to detectorists over the years.

Then there was the Frenchman's patch north of Mekka.
3000 Oz plus or so I heard.

Someone must know more.
100oz + nuggets on the surface.

I heard one guy was picking up a 100 Oz bit and while doing so specked another.
This was after the Frenchman' had finished. .....

Campfire stuff ......

Very Happy

Funny you have mentioned that (French mans patch) I was talking to someone just the other day about it. Most of the big ones had moss on them from sitting on top of the ground. Great find for the French man. Thanks Alan for sharing. Hope there's someone out there who can tell more about it. Very Happy

Cheers.

I believe my late mate , Frank , used to know the Frenchman. Frank used to go for a number of years to W.A. detecting. I would guess that patch was found 20 - 30 years ago.

Must have been more than one Frenchman , I can remember Frank talking about a Frenchman finding a lot of gold. It is too late to ask Frank R.I.P.

Frenchmans was funny....plenty of firearms and plenty of gold for some.

Specking patch goes back a bit further....tonnes of dryblowing from the oldtimers. There were five people working in an emu bob on the North side of Nambi Rd and it was Snowy that hit it first.

Peter Thompson found the rabbit Warren on the north side of the road. The old-timers were mainly on the south. Peter (RIP) found it with Snowy.
Talk to some of the people who were there in 80/81. There's still a few in Leonora.

Just don't want Peters name left out.

Moonlighting

Post  Reg Wilson on Mon Feb 06, 2017 11:24 pm

I'll bet I'm not the only one who knows of some big patches that were moonlighted or poached in broad daylight, both here in Victoria and elsewhere. I know the names, but I 'aint sayin'.

Hey Ron, I'm guessing it's my name that's been blanked out. My brother was working the Frenchmans area around the same time the Frenchman was but further East. When the patch went viral I went the other direction because I knew what would happen and I hate crowds at the best of times.  My first time in the area was late in the year when all the hoards had gone,  there's actually some footage of the Frenchmans patch in our first video.

Hi ****,

Sorry to put you in as such but thanks for clarifying, we had just started to venture out prospecting when all that was going down, the closest we got was to the fence with the rocks on the fencepost's feet (cause the ground was too hard to dig). We couldn't find a sign of anyone so went somewhere else and missed out on all the fun

Cheers,Ron

I could write a book on all the patches we missed out on. Starting with the Hand of Faith. We turned left off the road instead of right and were about a km away when it was found.

Biggest patches we have found were no more than 13 ounces but quite a few up to 10 ounces. Mostly small but some nuggets up to 6 ounces. Our best 3 month season in WA was 42 ounces with several small patches producing those finds.

Last year, using only one detector between the two of us we spent 8 weeks detecting in WA for $8000 worth of small gold from both new ground and old scrapes so there is still bread and butter gold around in the West.

Cheers, Jim

How old was the Frenchman in 2005 ? Just trying to work out if was the same guy as my mate Frank knew in the early 1980"s Frank had a Deepseeker and his wife a Gold Bug. He did upgrade to a Minelab XT. But that was all. He never found much gold but his mate found some nuggets only about 200 mts. away. Frank bought the nuggets and only sold them not long before he passed away.

Yes there have been some very very good finds over the years by small operators and detector operators.

Thanks for that picture Peter, now I know it's getting closer to the cooler weather and it won't be to long before we get back out there. Very Happy

Remarkable Gold Patches.

Post  whatsthetime on Sat Feb 11, 2017 3:25 pm

No big stuff just amazing where gold has been left lying around...
A couple of years ago we drove past a little village near Castlemaine just looking for a spot.
We noticed some mullock heaps just behind the backyards of the houses on the main drag so
we drove into a track running behind and parked. Talking major heaps and large diggings.
We started on some smaller 6 ft heaps and uncovered about 20 bits, not big but around the 1/2 gram.
My mate walked into a dry creek bed and had quite a bit of fun there. Also around 1/2 to 1 gram pieces.
I dug up a flat, about 20 x 30 meters with lots of bushes on it between the main digging and the creek bed.
Got about 20, 1/2 to 1 gram bits there within a couple of hours serious detecting. That was a real fun morning.
Just saying....behind the backyards and no one ever had a swing there....or... they did not listen.
