As some of you maybe aware the ABC as ceased its Shortwave service early this year .. Nick Xenophon is in the process of passing a bill in Parliament to keep the shortwave service going.
Submissions are required from the public and business arenas to support this Bill.

G'day gef50

I guess your right, I know I don't listen to ABC shortwave, I do listen to the normal AM station ABC when out bush in WA, but what your saying is a good idea and I hope you get plenty of support as like you say there are plenty of outdoors activities that could benefit by keeping this service going.

Seems like we all pay taxes for less and less services. Suspect

A few years ago the radio in our van gave up the ghost. Because it had a remote (very handy) I thought it would be hard to replace.
Lo and behold, the first place I looked in Kununurra had what they called a "truckies special", am, fm, 3 short wave bands and a REMOTE!

Was told that a/ the remote will operate the radio from the sleeper cab, and b/ the truckie can listen to the footy on ABC SW as soon as fm is out of range (25km., most towns).
We have found that there are plenty of locations around the top where the only radio reception is ABC SW.

This new ABC boss is obviously a puppet dancing to some ones string pulling.

Tks Mike n Dave .. .. Am from the Territory ... and at times venture way out of range of miday AM broadcasts and you can forget about FM.
I rely on the SW service for entertainment and current news as like to stay updated with current affairs ...
I could tune into Bahasa Indonesia svc or Radio NZ ... but rather listent to RA.

I remember well when travelling in the Simpson Desert or past Laverton and other places in W.A FM only extended say 25 km out of the towns.

AM radio reception was subject to fading and in hotter months a lot of static crashes so listened to the ABC Radio Australia on shortwave to get news and weather reports.

Now this is gone.

Wrote a couple of letters to the Ministers for Communication and the Arts and just got glab stories about how the VAST satellite service will solve all problems.

How a satellite dish is mounted on the roof of a moving 4WD was not explained. Let alone who was going to pay for the purchase of all the satellite gear.

Otherwise was given links to various mobile phone apps.....yeah sure....hope there is mobile phone coverage which as many on this forum will be aware does not exist in many places.

Considering the ABC is run from Ultimo in Sydney and as far as they are concerned the world ceases to exist anywhere past trendy St Peters or the Eastern suburbs of Sydney.

Given the current crop of politicians we have it is obvious they just could not care less about those in regional areas.

Pretty sure the good folk of Sheparton wouldn't be to happy either........Thats where the Transmitter station is located.

There is no substitute for Shortwave in distant remote places......... there quiet simply is no other way of doing it, unless of course you are happy to pay the $100K it cost to put up a tracking downlink system.

The buffons at the metro office don't even care about what happens 60kms out of the smoke........freeking hopeless.

If they had any brains they would upgrade the Sheparton TX station to a new solid state system, they will run by itself for years and years with lower power consumption, leave 1 staffer there to drink coffee and open the junk mail.........take a feed from ABC National programming and keep it going.

And yes I am experienced in this, and it is an absolute no brainer.
