buying a detector

Post  dazza1234 on Thu May 11, 2017 8:10 pm

Hi Guys
i am interested in purchasing a detector and have been looking at the sdc2300 does anyone have one of these or is there a detector that is good to use for a beginner, i want to learn all aspects of detecting and willing to join a club if anyone can recommend one local sth side of brisbane, want to learn how to read the ground and proper way to use detectors for better results, looking to eventually go and try and make a living from doing this, all i have is a little bit saved but also have time
cheers darryl

Welcome to the forum Darryl

Being a Victorian all my life, I can't much help you with the whereabouts of a Queensland prospecting club, but maybe some other member here from Queensland can.
You can't much go wrong with an SDC 2300, for it's quite an easy detector for a beginner to set up & start detecting. It also handles mineralised ground very well & can pick up the tiniest of gold bits. A good first detector to learn from.

Hi Darrly As what Kon61 said a SDC2300 is a very good machine for beginners and it will pick up gold. This machine cost about $3600 new. There is another machine coming on the market soon ( about mid June) it is called the Monster 1000, made by Minelab. We don't know much about it as yet, except it is a turn on and go machine also designed to find gold. We don't know if it will handle our highly mineralised ground that Australia has. This is coming on the market at about $1099

hi wombat thanks for your input just 1 question, how hard is it to learn on a gpx, thinking of this because it is the next level up from the sdc 2300 so i would learn all of it's features so as to be better at finding gold, not saying the 2300 won't find any, it's just the cost between the 2 models is is only around 1000 or so, would it be benificial to get the gpx or the 2300 cheers darryl

Hi Kon
thanks for getting back to me with your info, i konw the 2300 is a good machine, but i was thinking of going straight to the next level and looking at the gpx, would this be to hard to learn for a beginner or only asking it saves on buying 2 detectors when i can just buy the 1.
cheers darryl

A good working GPX 4500/5000 would be the next level & not to hard a learning curve to learn. The difference being a little more in price. The biggest advantage with a GPX is that you have a variety of coil sizes to choose from. Any queries as to the operational/functioning (settings/timings of a GPX), just ask some GPX user here. I'm sure they'll be happy to help.

Hi Kon
thanks for your reply, i am still tossing up between the two, but leaning a bit to the gpx for it is likrly to find more gold at a depth then the 2300, plus looking to find someone to go out with to get some experience in using detectors, do you know who would be a good teacher that i can have a chat with that lives up my way for maybe some tag along
cheers darryl
