satelite ?

Post  mogy on Fri Jun 23, 2017 5:09 am

While sitting in the garden last Sunday , clear sky , a superb sunny day I had the binoculars and was looking at anything passing , , a couple of buzzards , really high and the odd passenger plane way up high , then a bright spec caught my eye , as you sometimes see the sun reflecting on the alloy body of a plane, but this had no wings , no visible body , just the bright speck , watched it for a minute or two then it disappeared .
I'm guessing it was the sun catching a satellite ?
Never seen a satellite before in daylight , any one else any views ?

Most likely the space station ...
First time I saw it was early morning At work in The Pilbara near Yandi...
It was really traveling fast .....
I have watched it cross the sky a few times...
There is an app that will give you times and dates for your local area......

Cheers Nanjim

The ISS is pretty massive now, so that is a very likely source as others have noted, but flares (reflections) from the large constellation of Iridium (sat phone system) satellites are common and intensely bright too and can sometimes be seen in the daytime, although they are usually of quite brief duration.

The Wikipedia entry for 'Satellite flare' has a lot more details as well as links to flare prediction websites, so you can schedule your viewing session: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_flare

G'day mogy,

I have seen the space station going over just before sunset while over in WA and it's quite bright. The direction of travel is West to East, here in Australia.

Cheers.

Mike.

try heavens_above.com It will give you most of the stuff that is circling our little blue blob.
Iridium flares, the ISS and lots of others that I can't remember.
Looking up what is going to be overhead and then watching it appear is pretty awesome, even more so out in the bush.

Thanks for the thoughts, and links, I think this was on more of a a north south traverse so probably not the space station, but good to hear satellites do cause flares , I couldn't think of any thing else that would be a likely cause ,will keep an eye open for them in the future.
Thanks Guys Mogy
