Searching forum

Post  goldylocks on Thu Jun 29, 2017 11:02 pm

I sent the following to Kon61gold, thinking he'd be more appropriate than posting to the whole group, but two attempts over several weeks have got no reply, so I'll have to ask everyone:

I'm having no success searching for an old thread.

It's RIP Robby H in General Discussion. It was from late January but that forum only goes back 4 pages to February. Yet obviously this site goes back for years, as can be seen from other searches. I can even see that RIP Robby H exists when I do a Google Advanced Search, but when I click on that link it takes me to 4umer but says "The topic or post you requested does not exist".

I've tried everything I can think of but no luck. I feel like I'm missing something simple ...

Any help would be appreciated.

While I'm here, another small difficulty: I initially chose to private message you [rather than email], but when I clicked on it I was unable to get further, despite getting the message "You HAVEN'T reached the post limit for sending private messages."

G'day goldylocks

Just read this post & the reason I didn't receive your pm is because (even though you first registered back in 09), the moment a member de-registers themselves or is de-registered by management, they also lose all their past posts & when re-registering, start off as a new post member once more. The forum settings require that all new members (cause that's how the settings see you) require a minimum of 10 posts up, prior to allowing you to email/pm me, or any other member on this forum. This is why I did not get your personal message.
The forum settings for the General Discussion section, were or are also set for 4 months back (4 lines) prior to being automatically deleted. This is why you nor I cannot retrieve Robby H's info dating back to Jan 2017. The reason behind the 4 months maximum back-dated post retrieval, were strictly to free up un-necessary web space in/under the General Discussion section. What type of info were you after? Was this info from Robby H stored in the General Discussion section only? Could it be that it was moved or stored somewhere else?

Cheers Kon.

Thanks Kon.
It sounds like you were the man to talk to.
It sounds like it's just General Discussion that gets deleted, which explains why I can find other things going back years, but not that thread. It's odd that a general Google search can find it (in General Discussion), so it must exist somewhere. As far as I know it only existed in General Discussion. Presumably if it existed elsewhere on this site the Google search would have found it.
So has it disappeared forever?

By the way I'm aware of the similar thread about Robby on Finders.

It's not important, but for the record, I was never de-registered, either by myself or management.

G'day goldylocks.

Sorry goldylocks, but unless deliberately stored elsewhere (of where I no not) once the Threads/Topics are are deleted, they cannot be retrieved. They're gone for good.
I know that you didn't de-register yourself, nor had you ever been de-registered by Admin, or your posts/you, would have shown up as guest. The reason I stated/said what I said, was because that's how the program settings are set up & see it. If any member de-registers their forum registration & decides to re-register once again, he starts off from the beginning, with 0 posts. Same thing happens when a member asks to leave or not be part of this forum any more & asks management to de-register them, instead of doing it themselves. If ever they decide to re-register under their old user name, or new name, once again, they start from the beginning with 0 posts. The above mentioned info does not apply to you, but even though you are a long time registered member, the program/settings are set to see only the bare minimum of 10 posts, before allowing you to personal message.

Thanks everyone. I didn't know about those archive sites. Archive.org looked promising, but it failed to find the page I was after. I think because it only takes a copy occasionally, and the last one was in Nov 2016.
