Hi Jen
I fly Rc planes and gliders and am not up on drones.Have a look at Kogan, there selling a dji Phantom refurbished for $899 theres also Hobbyking and rctrader that are worth a look at.I gather your going to look at the dirt from the air.

Which drone to buy

Post  goldminer997 on Fri Sep 08, 2017 7:18 pm

Hi Jen
I have the parrot bebop drone with the skycontroller for the range of about two km the aerial footage is great and you can down load all to the ipad.
I use the 10in ipad for the view and you can log in a flight path for it to follow if you need to but it does cost for the program. Takes some time to get used to fly the thing but start off with small flight the go from there.

Re: Which drone to buy

Post  Gold Miner on Sat Sep 09, 2017 8:53 am

Hi Jen,
The DJI spark is also known as the 'selfie' drone, it really is the baby of DJI's fleet. If its windy, forget flying it.
I have the Mavic pro (as well as 250 fpv racing drones and the carbon fibre multiwii scarab).
I bought the Mavic for its portability and flight time. It has a 12 mp camera which is fine for what I want. Super easy to fly with some great automated flight modes.
For a bit more money I could've gone for the Phantom 4 which houses a 20 mp camera and the same features as the Mavic, however no where near as portable. Being bigger and a tad more powerful it can handle wingy conditions more than the Mavic.
You will note that I have only referanced DJI drones, the reason for this is that they really are the minelab of drones.

DJI recently brought out the Mavic platinum which boasts almost half our of flight time and 60% quieter than the mavic pro.
Rumour is that one day a Mavic pro 2 might come out with a better camera..... it could be coming or it might not!!!

G'day Jen, like you I am about to invest as well, and have been doing some research and decided on
a Hubsan H501S X4 Brushless Drone - Advanced Version.
20 minutes flytime, return to base, gps etc etc.
I have had a fly, and as a complete novice found it easy.
On special atm

All at a great price of under $300.
Scroll down on the above link for a some reviews.

We saw a bloke in the West this year using a drone to find good ground, but only saw him at a distance. Personally, I'd rather walk it.

Not for looking at the ground so much, ( not a bad idea though )  more for seeing who's where
239 hectares is way to much land to walk everyday
Also parts you can not drive to, Very Rough terrain
Can you imagine having a birds eye view? WOW!!

Re: Which drone to buy

Post  onthehunt on Tue Sep 12, 2017 10:04 am

I have 5 drones

DJI Phantom 1
DJI Phantom 2
DJI Inspire 1
3DR Hexacopter
Qunam Nova

I originally bought the first one for fun, but I now use them regularly for herding and monitoring my sheep.

My favourite is the Inspire 1 because it has an awesome HD video link which I can watch full screen on my TV live up to 3km's away, and it's easier to program autonomous routes into the app.

They are all equally easy to fly, it just comes down to how much you want to spend, whether you need autonomous GPS flying, and what kind of video quality you want.

I was aware of that, but you get what you pay for.
The bloke that owned the one I had a play with is bringing the footage to me next week, so I can
decide then if it is good enough for my needs.
I'll try and post one of the vids for you all to see what a sub $300 machine can do.

Magpies don't like them either:

At the very end of the video, the bird swoops in for the kill after he's succeeded in grounding the drone upside down!

Hi Jen

I had two Falcons try and take mine even after it landed , diving down on it to pick it up so keep it out of the sky if you think any big birds are likely to be about.

Excellent thing to have to patrol a lease as long as they don't have a shotgun lol

Hi,

I fly my DJI Mavic, I love the video and photo quality, the portability is amazing. I used to fly a P3A but the mavic is so much better! Spark is cool but limited, Mavic is so much more.
