Welcome to the forum.

Depends on what you want to find and where.
Of the three detectors that you mentioned; All are good gold detectors with the 4500 being a workhorse and very reliable. The 5000 is good but not a whole lot better than the 4500. The GP Extreme is also great. These detectors have differing capabilities where small gold is concerned so maybe someone can chip in and give you some handy clues.

Hi Wayne

A mate had a Garrett ATX and didn't do very well with it at all, he moved on to a gpx4500 and did a whole lot better, the Gp extreme is still a great detector and probably the only model that I would go back to if I had to choose one of the earlier machines as I did well with mine for many years, the earlier model gpx4500 you can pick up for $2000-2500, they are still my favourite model and I have done very well with mine, good on small gold and surprising depth on the bigger bits, the later gpx4500 is much closer to the gpx5000 but as stated you can get a new one for $3500 or so and of course you get the warranty with it.

One thing I would stress if you buy a gpx4500 or gpx5000 is buy from a detector shop or make sure the seller has a purchase receipt and a serial number that you can confirm with minelab as the chinese have made bogus copies of both of these machines, the early ones are easy to recognise particularly if the menu is written in chinese Laughing , but the later ones are harder to identify but still don't work properly. Suspect

All depends on your budget of course but the gpx 4500 would be the best bang for your buck and you can be confident that you will have a capable machine right from the start.

cheers

Wayne you also have a great range of used or new coils to chose from for the 4500.
