beechworth gold (always dig a target)
being a newbie to detecting I always dig a target . Working in beechworth recently i spotted two locals detecting the local footy ground.I had a chat to them and they told me if i wanted to find a bit of gold my best chances were on the buckland gap (designated detecting area). Anyway friday being poets day i decided i would give it a try . Arrive at the detecting area to be met by an explosion of regrowth fron the 09 fires the saplings were thick as,and the hardenbergia creeper tripped you up at every opportunity. When I finally got through to the old diggings i turned the detector on and detected the first gully i came to. I straight away got a huge signal but looking around me at all the junk thought it must be another bit of scrap metal but decided to dig it anyway .After 5inches down scanned the hole signal still there, another dig (mostly rocks) signal gone ,move rocks from pile and scan again ,signal gone, scan rocks big signal signal was coming from a rock about the size of a tennis ball not knowing what it was i hit it with my pick and the three pieces that it broke into all showed Yella .This target must have been detected heaps of times over the years and discarded as junk. But to a newbie who digs every signal it was 6 ounces of beautiful GOLD. It was specimen gold probably dropped by a fellow prospector 150 years ago. Imagine how rich the deposits must have been not miss 6 ounces of gold. Will post pictures later

Re: beechworth gold (always dig a target)
So it broke into three pieces! I can only imagine you had to crush it up in a dolly pot to obtain the 6 ounces of gold? would this be correct?
Great find Cranky.

Hay, you use the same gold pan as me. And they all say it's just another hot rock. Totally classic
Yabadabafrickenfrackinwabbledabbldo! Or did you smash up a Violet Crumble.
Looks great, especially in the old black pan & cheap as chips & always works wonderfully I must add.
Cheers Big time. Chris.

Beechworth Gold ( Always dig a target)
Great story Cranky...and a terrific find that reinforces the need to check out the signal to eliminate the trash from the gold
Well done and ATB for your future finds.

What's the best bet for gold found in quartz ? Crush it to remove the gold or leave them as specimen pieces? My feeling is that they might be more valuable with the gold left in the rocks found, rather than crushing them in a dolly pot.

By no means an expert on this Marigold, but have come to the conclusion after a little research on this site and other ones, that if there is no gold showing and said rock gives a signal well then its smashin time
