Noisy 4500 unless on enhance?

Post  davo on Sun Nov 13, 2011 10:37 pm

Had a problem with the 4500 today north of Wedderburn. Running medium Nuggetfinder, unless using enhance mode detector was making a noise over anything. Is this normal? Davo

Without getting technical the simple answer is yes, its normal as there is a lot of stuff going on when your running in enhance which is not going on while using the other timings.

Have been detecting on and off for a while and just did a course with Greckie in Bendigo but probably just a bit lazy and confused with the settings on the 4500. I been finding a little bit of small stuff, Daylesford, Tarnagulla, Trentham. Decided to head up around Wedderburn yesterday and located a couple of small nuggets. Started finding that the detector was making alot of noise and became confused about what set up I should have going. Specifically the front panel. As I was running a nugget finder medium mono coil I wasnt sure if my front panel should be in enhance or N or whether I had knocked it over by mistake but noticed that when I had it in N the ground noise was ridiculous. So I flicked it back to Enhance and continued and then wondered what I might be missing as I hadnt had a signal, so I put a small piece .5 gram on the ground and found that the detector could only pick it up about 2 inches fronm the coil. Very disheartened. How deep do these coils go. Its brand new.

So is it the ground? Is it my settings? I guess I dont understand the relationship between the front and back panels. I was running front panel as follows Search mode G, soil timings ?, Ground balance Fixed, Coil/Rx M and the rear panel Backlight 1, Vol 8, GB type I think General, Special Sens smooth, Man tune 180 +, Motion slow, Rx gain 8, Audio normal, Audio tone ?, Satbilzer 8, Signal 8, Target vol 8, REsponse normal, Traking Slow, Iron reject on.

Anyhow confused?

Morning Davo,
Read all the info in the GPX4500 section, this may unravel some of your confusion.
Remember you must have the timings switch on "Special" if you want to use the extra timings, Sensitive Smooth etc.

Davo, probably the best thing to get up to speed with on the 4500 is how to use the full factory reset function.
Its in your owners manual and its very handy for when you become lost with the settings.
Having said that your still in a world of hurt if your soil timing switch is in the "N" or Special setting after resetting the detector back to factory.
Get to know the timings and when best to use them, or resetting will still give you a headache if you do the above when your soil timing is set in "N" when you should be in Enhance. By doing this you will still have a noisy detector when it nears the ground running your mono coil causing you to throw your hands up in the air. cheers

Enhance on the front soil timing switch means your in Enhance only and whats in the Special menu will have no bearing till you flick the soil timing switch to Special.....then it activates those timings in the Special menu.
The rest of the settings will work no matter what timing your in and are pretty forgiving.
