I guess if no one knows about it , just start somewhere and grid it.... do it all over time, if you think it has potential.

Hi Ryan
Detect the lot!! that's the best way, but like you said you are hiring at first, that said the mullock heaps will most likely have alot of junk which will slow you down, maybe try the gullies below the diggings ( it is a bit hard to advise not knowing the terrain) if it is steep the gold will travel further away, if there are flats below the diggings this is where the gold may get stopped, I would start just below the diggings at a point far enough away that the trash maybe a bit less, you might like to do a bit of test panning to see where the gold is getting trapped, do you have any info on what may have come out of your area, is this an alluvial field or hard rock.
good luck
Lee

Re: best spot to detect
not real sure on the top of the mountain their is a massive digging going down probably 40 ft into the ground following a line of qaurtz.
also do you think i would be better of hiring a minelab gpx 4500 all the time or buy a minelab terra 705?

Re: best spot to detect
Right, lets start again Ryan.Firstly welcome to the Forum.
Now,you say that the terrain is steep,if that is the case, even the shouldering flatter sections adjoining those hills will contain depth, unless the flatter sections bellow the mines have been surfaced and brought down to bed rock or clay pan, then that would be a good place to start gridding.Don't waste time concentrating on the steep hill sides themselves, for I've found that from past experiences they will rarely hold gold if their incline is more than 30 degrees.Mines in the near vicinity, indicate Mining operations, meaning thorough processing of the surrounding mullock,so expect little gold in the near by mullocks surrounding the mines themselves and a fair bit of junk, apart from the stray thrown out, unluckily missed specimen. As for the gully bellow,if it's been worked down to the bedrock by the old timers along its length, its certainly worth detecting especially if it runs east west exposing slate bars which are always good trappers for gold.

If it is Wellington NSW I live at Dubbo and travel through Wello to Orange, I have a X-Terra 705 if you would like to have a look
